If you’ve already started sewing, sooner or later you’ll be faced with the dilemma of how to select fabric. What are the best places to shop? What makes a fabric work for dressmaking? What to watch out for as a beginner?

This workshop is for you if you want to learn about the most commonly used sewing fabrics. We will talk about the composition of the raw materials. What are the properties of natural and synthetic fibers? What are the most important characteristics of cotton, linen, silk, and wool? How does weaving affect the material’s drape and durability? What does viscose, rayon, tencel, polyester mean? What makes a textile elastic?

What should you ask the salesperson in the fabric shop? What questions can you expect when purchasing textiles?

What do you need to know about knitted fabrics? What are the basic types of knitted, elastic jerseys and how are they used? How do they behave while sewing?

We will look at and feel many types of material samples, but if you have already purchased some fabrics, bring some cuttings and we will discuss what they are suitable for.

We will talk about cutting and what you need to consider when buying yardage.

Your sewing instructor will be Zsuzsi Víg, founder of Stitch Budapest, Fashion Institute of Technology graduate, fashion expert with over 15 years industry experience.
