My students often ask where to buy fabric for the beginner sewing course. I highly recommend that you buy cotton canvas (pamutvászon in Hungarian), because it is much easier to work with than other materials. Do not buy synthetic or viscose fabric, because it slips under the sewing machine and is more difficult to cut and sew. Also, do not buy thicker canvas, because it is difficult to handle for beginners when sewing multiple layers. Do not under any circumstances buy elastic, stretchy, knit or jersey fabric, because it needs to be handled differently than regular woven fabric.
I do not recommend dark, black, navy and burgundy fabrics either, because the stitching is more difficult to see on these and they tend to bleed, release fabric dye. I do not recommend plaid either, because it is more difficult to match the plaids. Patterned fabric is easier to sew than solid color, because it is clear which side is the right side and which is the wrong side.
Most often I buy fabric for my classes at Dekor-Lakástextil store, where you can find a great variety of printed and solid color cotton canvas.

You may also find a wide variety of cotton canvas at Röltex stores (it is a chain of shops). These can be found throughout the city. I usually go to the Röltex stores on Erzsébet körút near Wesselényi Street, on Király Street and the Fény Street market.
„I love textil” stores also have a limited range of cotton canvas, in limited quantities. They are really inexpensive „dead-stock” shops.
Some students shop at Folír on Karinthy Frigyes út.
A bit out of the way, but I really like the Rokka fabric store on Petneházy Street in Újpest.

If you prefer to purchase your fabric online, check out these shops:
If you are looking for high-quality premium quilting materials, look around here (prices are much higher, and as a beginner I think you should buy more inexpensive fabrics first):
